The Britney Spears family feud is putting conservatorships back in the spotlight. Earlier this month, the pop music icon was at the center of a closed-door hearing in Los Angeles. Spears reportedly wants to change who oversees her conservatorship or have it removed altogether.
The 37-year-old singer has been under a conservatorship controlled by her father since a very public mental health meltdown in 2007. Ms. Spears now alleges that her father, Jamie Spears, forced her into mental health treatment in April 2019.
The conservatorship does not give Jamie Spears the power to forcibly commit his daughter to a mental health facility nor does it allow him to force her to take medication without her consent. Jamie Spears does have control over his daughter’s estimated $215 million fortune.
The hearing ended with a judge ordering an expert evaluation of the conservatorship. There is no timetable yet for the evaluation to be completed.
