As Gaslowitz Frankel continues our charitable giving program to celebrate the firm’s 25th anniversary, founding partner Adam Gaslowitz has chosen the Live Thrive and CHaRM for his donation.
When thinking about a cause that meant a great deal to me, I couldn’t help but turn to the Live Thrive and CHaRM organization. Here is my story:
Frankly speaking, there were so many organizations I wanted to support, it was not easy to pick just one. You can actually learn about many wonderful charities in the Greater Atlanta area by clicking here.
I’m on the Live Thrive! board because I care very deeply about the cause it supports. So, let me share with you what Live Thrive is all about.
This non-profit started as a blog with a mission to spread ideas about the ways in which our communities can be made healthier, not only today, but for years to come.
Luckily, people and businesses responded with great ideas, leading the organization to the discovery that there was a lack of environmental awareness and involvement in the community.
People actually had very simple unanswered questions, such as:
What is sustainability?
Why is it important to recycle?
Why buy locally-grown foods?
Why should one conserve water?
Live Thrive Atlanta wanted to get involved with the community. The initial fist step was organizing a drive of recyclable items that couldn’t be left at curb-sides. During that event, people started wondering, “What about the hazardous waste, which is more difficult to recycle?”
The leftover paint, pesticides, chemicals, batteries, light bulbs, and expired medicines – neither had a procedure for people to follow when they wanted to safely dispose of the items.
Live Thrive Atlanta took charge there and then, and they committed to showing the community how it was possible to collect all this waste and dispose or recycle it responsibly.
A year later, Atlanta’s first-ever household hazardous waste collection event took place, and it was a huge success. I wanted to share with you this mind-blowing number: just one event like this costs about $60,000 to organize!!! They usually take place about twice a year, and each lasts for about 4 hours.
However, even with this opportunity, some people often can’t make the time to dispose of those items safely.
That’s why Peggy Whitlow-Ratcliffe, the visionary behind Live Thrive, decided to open CHaRM – Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials.
CHaRM is a physical facility that’s open 5 to 7 days a week and aims to serve as a one-stop-shop for disposal and recycling. It’s there to make your life easier. Whenever you’re out and about with the family, just stop by and feel free to bring hazard items as well as kids’ mattresses, car tires, and similar items.

Today, the organization is working to bring environmental education to schools at all levels. It’s dedicated to making our community a better place to live and thrive.
